about

ODE TO THE WIZARD:

This track is a celebration of the Smilerphone and its creator, Smiles. This Wizard is a very interesting and talented man that I had heard about during the beginning of my time in eSwatini. Ralph was the one who introduced me to him and essentially made this whole thing happen. Recorded at Matambos house “sandwiched in-between in the mountains and the famed area of Msunduza on the outskirts of Mbabane, were the real shuffling urban spirit of eSwatini lives”. Matambo can be heard projecting poetry in this track. “A gathering always comes with friends, soup and herbal tea from Matambo’s endless kitchen garden and quality smoke from the countless purveyors passing by that furnish a mood of seriousness and ritualistic intent whilst we set up the Smilerphone in the bamboo house. Smiles’ music is serious music, the repetition, and cyclical nature puts one deep in trance whilst he accents and punctuates the Kalimba and percussions with his voice, the Smilerphone, and flute. The man, like his music, is an enigma, he lives in a form of magic realism that is both poetic and tragic, strong yet vulnerable and it’s infectious like his charisma.” - Ralph Smit.
